Individual Meters vs. Shared Meters

Measured utility allocation replaces estimates with actual consumption, giving residents fair bills and a direct reason to save water and energy.

Individual Meters vs. Shared Meters

Measured utility allocation replaces estimates with actual consumption, giving residents fair bills and a direct reason to save water and energy.

About water and energy allocation

In a multi-unit building, the main utility meter records the total consumption of all units and common areas. Dividing the bill by floor area, occupancy, or an equal share cannot reflect each unit’s actual behavior. Bruntab submetering records each unit and uses the readings to allocate the main bill transparently.

What is an individual submeter?

An individual submeter measures the water, electricity, gas-related thermal energy, or cooling energy used by one apartment, office, shop, or process. Its data can be collected automatically and converted into an itemized sub-bill.

What is a shared meter?

A shared meter belongs to the entire property. It remains the official utility meter, but without downstream submeters it cannot identify where consumption occurred or who should pay each share.

Advantages of individual measurement

  • Fair payment based on measured use
  • Fewer disputes between residents and building managers
  • Early detection of leakage and abnormal consumption
  • Remote readings without entering individual units
  • Clear hourly, daily, and billing-period records
  • Greater property value and easier building administration

Submetering and conservation

When users can see the cost of their own choices, waste declines. Alerts and trend reports make hidden leaks and excessive use visible, while accurate data helps managers target maintenance and efficiency investment.
